Justice Dipankar Datta was born on 9 February 1965; his father, the late Justice Salil Kumar Datta, was a former judge of the Calcutta High Court. He was elevated directly to the Calcutta High Court bench on 22 June 2006.
He served as Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court from 28 April 2020 before his Supreme Court appointment on 12 December 2022.
His docket covers criminal, service, civil, and electricity matters. He authored the ruling in Aligarh Muslim University v Naresh Agarwal establishing criteria for minority institution status, and upheld the EVM-VVPAT verification system.
