Justice Joymalya Bagchi was born on 3 October 1966 in Kolkata and schooled at Calcutta Boys' School. He enrolled as an advocate on 28 November 1991, practising criminal and constitutional law and representing human rights organisations, also teaching at Calcutta University.
After over 13 years on the Calcutta High Court bench (with a brief transfer to the Andhra Pradesh High Court in 2021), he was elevated to the Supreme Court on 17 March 2025.
He is known for his nuanced approach to capital punishment and the "rarest of rare" doctrine, setting aside a death penalty where criminal conspiracy was not conclusively proven.
