K.V. Viswanathan

Justice K.V. Viswanathan was born on 26 May 1966 in Kalpathy, Kerala. He enrolled at the Bar in 1988 and trained under Senior Advocates C.S. Vaidyanathan and K.K. Venugopal before building an independent Supreme Court practice in constitutional, arbitration, commercial, and administrative law.

He was designated a Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court in April 2009 and elevated directly from the Bar to the bench on 19 May 2023 — one of a small number of advocates to be so elevated — with the longest remaining tenure among current sitting judges.

His rulings have examined the scope of a court's power to modify an arbitral award and addressed significant constitutional questions.
