Justice Sanjay Karol was born on 23 August 1961 in Shimla. He enrolled as an advocate in 1986 and served as Advocate General of Himachal Pradesh from 1998 to 2003. He practised constitutional, corporate, taxation, criminal, and civil law.
He held Chief Justice positions in the Tripura High Court (2018–2019) and the Patna High Court (2019–2023) before his Supreme Court elevation on 6 February 2023.
His Supreme Court docket is primarily criminal. He is known for banning animal sacrifices in temples in Tripura, recognising sanitation access as a fundamental right, and upholding parliamentary amendments extending CBI and ED director tenures.
